Perkins Spearheads Project Coeus for Hybrid Powertrain Development

0 0

Perkins has joined forces with Equipmake and Loughborough University to craft a pioneering ‘drop-in’ hybrid integrated power unit aimed at off-highway OEMs. This unit promises to offer a seamless replacement for diesel engines, supporting a swift shift to greener alternatives.

“This project will explore, innovate and lead the way to solving some of the key challenges facing the off-highway industry’s energy transition,” said David Goldspink of Perkins.

Technical Breakthrough with Multiple Fuel Compatibility

The project’s core is the development of a hybrid power unit that matches the diesel counterpart in power and response, making it attractive for a wide array of industrial OEMs. Key specifications of the hybrid powertrain include:

  • Multi-fuel support, with an initial focus on hydrogen.
  • A 7-litre Perkins 1200 Series industrial power unit base.
  • Hybrid-electric components for 45 to 250 kW output.
  • Integration of ECM sensors, radiators, cooling packs, filtration, control systems, and aftertreatment hardware. This integrated approach is designed to shorten OEM development timeframes while curbing engineering and assembly expenditures.

Future-Proofing Off-Highway Machines

Set to launch this month, the three-and-a-half-year Project Coeus is funded by a £11.14 million ($13,81 million) UK government grant and is headquartered at Perkins’ global engineering base in Peterborough. The collaborative effort focuses on harnessing e-powertrain technology from Equipmake and leveraging Loughborough University’s expertise in engine analytics and emissions control. The project’s ambition is to replace current diesel engines with a hybrid system adaptable to various low-carbon fuels, assisting in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Perkins’ Broader Commitment to Energy Transition

Beyond Project Coeus, Perkins is actively advancing several initiatives to guide customers towards a more sustainable future. These include a range of lithium-ion battery solutions across different voltages and customizable diesel-electric hybrid powertrains.

Perkins also offers engines compatible with a wide spectrum of lower-carbon intensity fuels, like HVO and biodiesel, all part of a concerted effort to provide flexible, low-emission power solutions for off-highway applications.
